What time can a loan recovery agent call you in India? On 15 September 2026 there is no single published hour: Bajaj Finance’s page states 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday; Airtel Finance’s blog states 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. RBI directions fix recovery contact to 08:00-19:00 unless the borrower agrees otherwise, but only from 1 January 2027.
This desk read Bajaj Finance’s recovery-guidelines page, Airtel Finance’s blog post, the Agrud Partners note, the Business Standard report, taxupdate.in’s summary and the indianpaycalculator.in explainer on 15 September 2026.
What time can a loan recovery agent call you in India, source by source
| Source (as read 15 Sept 2026) | Calls and visits | Sundays and holidays | Before a visit | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bajaj Finance’s page, published 9 June 2026 | 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday | “Contact is not allowed” | Written notice; agent carries ID and authorisation letter | Lender’s own stated practice, attributed to “RBI guidelines” |
| Airtel Finance’s blog, 11 October 2025 | 7:00 am to 7:00 pm | Not mentioned | Not stated | Attributed to “RBI Circulars”, no document named |
| RBI directions issued 6 August 2026, per Agrud Partners and taxupdate.in | 08:00 to 19:00 unless the borrower expressly authorises another time | Not mentioned in either summary | At least one day’s notice before the first visit | Binding from 1 January 2027 |
In the text this desk read, neither the Bajaj page nor the Airtel post names the RBI circular its hour comes from, and neither mentions the August 2026 directions. rbi.org.in does not open to a plain fetch, and no page read at 200 quotes the current rule.
What changes on 1 January 2027
The Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks - Responsible Business Conduct) Fourth Amendment Directions, 2026 were notified on 6 August 2026, according to Agrud Partners, which also reports parallel directions the same day for non-banking financial companies and housing finance companies. For a loan-app borrower the NBFC one matters, because the app is a front and the licence, and the obligation, sit with the NBFC behind it.
Agrud’s summary of the rules: contact by call, message or visit only between 08:00 and 19:00 unless the borrower has expressly authorised another window; notice at least one day before a recovery agent’s first visit; calls and visits recorded and kept six months or until related litigation ends; a current list of engaged recovery agencies on the lender’s website.
None of it is in force today. Business Standard reported on 6 August 2026 that the draft had proposed 1 October 2026 and the RBI moved the date to 1 January 2027 after stakeholder feedback. The same report says the RBI refused to let newly engaged agents work before IIBF certification, and that the directions do not apply to a lender’s own employees, to agents collecting regular instalments, or to law firms issuing notices.
Who is actually calling a loan-app borrower
Our August assessment of collections conduct as a product feature argued that the collector is usually a third party the app never names. The 2027 agency list and day’s notice let a borrower check the caller is authorised at all. Until then the check is the lender’s own page, as with the cooling-off period.
What time can a loan recovery agent call me now?
Today the hour depends on which lender’s page you read. Bajaj Finance’s page states 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday; Airtel Finance’s blog states 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. This desk read no RBI text for the current rule, so hold a collector to the lender’s own published window and your loan agreement until 1 January 2027.
Can recovery agents call on Sundays and holidays in India?
Bajaj Finance’s page states that on Sundays and holidays contact is not allowed. That is Bajaj’s page’s claim about its own practice. Airtel’s blog does not mention Sundays, and neither summary of the 2027 directions this desk read, Agrud Partners’ or taxupdate.in’s, mentions a Sunday or holiday ban. Do not assume every lender or app observes one.
Can a recovery agent visit my home without notice?
Under the directions issued 6 August 2026, per Agrud Partners, the borrower must get at least one day’s notice before a recovery agent’s first visit, and the lender must publish a current list of its engaged recovery agencies on its website. Those rules bind from 1 January 2027. Bajaj’s page already states borrowers are notified in writing before a visit.
A night call is a complaint to the NBFC whose licence the app runs on, not to the agency; we assessed the NBFC Internal Ombudsman as that route in August. Nothing here is financial advice. Borrow only from lenders licensed in your own jurisdiction, and verify a licence with the regulator directly rather than trusting an app listing.
